{"id":450,"date":"2017-03-24T12:39:24","date_gmt":"2017-03-24T19:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hollywood-nobody.com\/blog\/?p=450"},"modified":"2017-03-24T12:39:24","modified_gmt":"2017-03-24T19:39:24","slug":"the-emperors-new-clothes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hollywood-nobody.com\/blog\/?p=450","title":{"rendered":"THE EMPEROR&#8217;S NEW CLOTHES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hollywood-nobody.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Emperor-Has-No-Clothes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-451\" src=\"https:\/\/hollywood-nobody.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Emperor-Has-No-Clothes-300x268.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hollywood-nobody.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Emperor-Has-No-Clothes-300x268.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hollywood-nobody.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Emperor-Has-No-Clothes.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve always mistrusted critics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Truth be known, there\u2019s a part of me that subscribes to the old saw that those who can\u2019t, criticize.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was, however, forced to reconsider all of this when my son\u2014my <em>own<\/em> son\u2014proved himself a gifted critic!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was a completely unexpected development.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He had, after all, begun his adult life as a stuntman, dying conspicuously in a number of Steven Segal films\u2014most memorably when Segal threw him backwards through a window in what became the signature image of the movie.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He was, in other words\u2026how shall I put it?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He leaned more heavily toward the physical than the intellectual, and his interest in the arts was best described as minimal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was non-existent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And so it was that his wife decided to civilize him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By dragging him (kicking and screaming, I\u2019m sure) to L.A.\u2019s MOMA and exposing him to resplendent examples of contemporary art.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was in a gallery dedicated to installation art that his talent first manifested itself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The installation in question, which I myself was never privileged to view, sat on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Steven studied it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then stood over it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Squatted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And began to grunt and groan like someone suffering terminal constipation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His wife was, for reasons that will forever elude me, mortified.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I, however, when I learned of the incident, swelled with pride\u2014genuinely dazzled by his critical insight.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>I<\/em> had a critic in the family!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Henceforth, I did my best to banish my memory of such things as the L.A. Times art critic\u2019s commentary on \u201cRusty Pipe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It, like the piece Steven reviewed, was an installation at L.A.\u2019s MOMA\u2014in this case, a length of rusty pipe removed from a demolition site and suspended from the ceiling of an alcove in one of the museum\u2019s galleries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Times critic was so impressed with it that he wrote two full pages of analysis, employing words and concepts far beyond my humble capacity to understand.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To be honest, I have to admit that everything in me cried out, \u201cIt\u2019s just a piece of pipe, for God\u2019s sake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I felt the commentary deserved much the same response as my son gave that other piece of sh\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sorry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I meant to say, that other piece of installation art.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have to admit that the \u201cRusty Pipe\u201d review sorely tested my resolve to admire critics now that my son was one of them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But I persisted until just the other day when I stumbled upon another Times reviewer and his evaluation of Terence Malick\u2019s <em>Song to Song<\/em>, which recently debuted at Austin\u2019s SXSW Festival.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, you should know that I was blown away by Malick\u2019s first two films, <em>Badlands<\/em> and <em>Days of Heaven<\/em>\u2014both examples of stunning poetic realism, both examinations of characters driven by forces they can neither understand nor control.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was not alone.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood was abuzz with talk of this remarkable new filmmaker.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Michael Eisner, my boss at Paramount, had done more than just talk about him&#8211;he had given him a generous contract, renewing it year after year even though Malick had disappeared and delivered nothing for years on end.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is, I\u2019m convinced, unwise to declare any artist a genius.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The danger is, of course, that he or she will <em>believe<\/em> what people are saying, take it so completely to heart that they lapse into total self-indulgence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When, after twenty years, Malick finally reappeared on the scene, the artist in him had gone missing in action, replaced by a poseur\u2014 pretentious, contemptuous of the members of his audience, uninterested in entertaining them or telling them a coherent story or creating compelling characters they could care about.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2026when I came across Justin Chang\u2019s rapturous review of Malick\u2019s latest effort\u2014a review that refers to the writer-director\u2019s incoherent, uninvolving <em>The Tree of Life<\/em> as a \u201cmasterwork\u201d and even manages to praise his deliberate disregard of the rules of linear storytelling, his inability to write dialogue that sounds anything like real speech, and his reduction of the ever so distinctive Austin, Texas to a familiar \u201cMalickian landscape\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2026I wanted to criy out, \u201cHorseshit!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But that would have been unfair both to horses and to the fragrant deposits they are known to make.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I remain faithful to my son and proud of his insight, his remarkable critical intuition, but I have to say that I\u2019ve once again lost faith in critics in general.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Time after time, they look upon a naked, fat, flabby old man and praise his new clothes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Time after time, they look upon an empty landscape and miraculously discover a breathtaking skyline.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Number me with the little girl who tugged at her mother\u2019s sleeve to protest the emperor\u2019s lack of clothes and with Gertrude Stein who looked at the Oakland of her day and clearly saw that there was no there there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:20px;
